Location: Makena, Honua‘ula

In partnership with Kīpaipai Maui and ʻĀina Archaeology, this Pilina ʻĀina: Planting Workshop was the second in a free three-part community series designed to strengthen pilina (connection) with ʻāina (land; that which feeds) in the Honuaʻula moku.

In this hands-on session, participants had the chance to plant previously propagated native plants for restoration in a preservation area in Makena. Together, participants stepped into a learning experience encapsulating ‘āina restoration, environmental stewardship, and cultural knowledge.

During this workshop, we planted koaiʻa, wiliwili, pā‘ūohi‘iaka, pōhinahina, ʻūlei, ʻakoko, and ‘ākulikuli. We also scattered ʻāweoweo seeds. These native species are intentionally selected for their cultural relevance and ecological suitability to the preservation areas of Makena. As we worked, we learned about traditional native planting practices, explored the functional roles each plant plays within the landscape, and deepened our understanding of how these species connect to the unique environment and history of Makena.

Through these collective efforts, the Pilina ʻĀina series continues to nurture the Honua‘ula moku, ensuring the longevity of this special place. Mahalo to those who joined us and dedicated time and aloha to restoring the preservation areas of Makena and reconnecting with the ‘āina.
