Makenaʻs Living Culture
For generations, the Mākena region has held the stories, traditions, and knowledge of our kūpuna. Over the decades, archaeologists have written manuscripts, developed and gathered maps of the region, and recovered materials from the land itself — artifacts crafted by hand, remains of daily life that reveals the resiliency of our kūpuna, and botanical samples that tell us what once grew here. Together, these pieces form a living record of Mākena’s history. But today, much of this ʻike is stored far from home, in museum and research collections.
Aloha Makena Foundation is working to return these resources to their rightful place in Mākena. Together, we can build a safe, permanent home for this knowledge, where our community can protect it, learn from it, and share it with the next generation.
Your support will help us create an archival facility in Mākena that honors our kūpuna and ensures their stories remain with the land that gave them life.
This is more than preservation — it is about bringing our heritage home, keeping it alive, and strengthening our connection to both place and to one another.
Join us in making this vision a reality.
