On Sunday, August 20, the Pacific Whale Foundation will host the Paniaka Restoration Golf Tournament at Mākena Golf & Beach Club. The event will raise funds to support the restoration of Paniaka Wetland, an important ecological and cultural site located within Mākena State Park.
Supporting Paniaka
Once part of a network of wetlands across South Maui, Paniaka holds significant ecological and cultural importance. However, non-native and invasive plant species have increasingly taken over the area, transforming the landscape and crowding out native vegetation. Additionally, introduced predators are interfering with the recovery of endangered birds and sea turtles.

Where Funds Will Go
Proceeds from the tournament will directly support restoration efforts at Paniaka, including:
Removal of invasive vegetation
Trapping and removal of predators
Installation of a predator fence
Conservation and maintenance of the restored area
The Pacific Whale Foundation is leading this effort in collaboration with Hawai‘i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Oneloa Coalition, a group of local organizations and residents committed to preserving Mākena State Park.
