On Wednesday, July 26, 2017, Moʻokiha o Piʻilani, Maui’s traditional double-hull voyaging canoe, made its first visit to the waters of Maluaka and joined the final two sessions of Mākena Golf & Beach Club’s Keiki Kiaʻi Kai Academy. As part of this complimentary ocean safety and stewardship program for Maui youth, participants had the rare opportunity to board the canoe and receive hands-on instruction in traditional navigation and sailing from the crew.

Keiki Kiaʻi Kai Academy, held at Maluaka Beach and led by Mākena’s expert watermen and water women, combines hands-on lessons in water safety, first aid, and rescue protocol with cultural and environmental education—building confidence, physical conditioning, and a strong connection to the ocean.
